There is so much to discover about Kefalonia,
Kefalonia is steeped in history and mythology, believed to be the home of Odysseus from The Odyssey. Ancient ruins scattered across the island hint at its storied past, while Venetian castles and Byzantine monasteries add to its timeless charm.
The island boasts breathtaking landscapes, from the otherworldly Melissani Cave, where sunlight dances on an underground lake, to the mysterious Katavothres, a rare geological phenomenon where seawater disappears into the earth. Its dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and lush mountains create an unforgettable backdrop.
Kefalonia is home to the rare loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and the elusive Kefalonian fir tree, found nowhere else in the world. The island is also famous for its Robola wine, a crisp, citrusy white variety grown in high-altitude vineyards, making it a must-try for wine lovers.

Fiskardo is one of the most beautiful harbors in the Ionian Islands. It still has its original Venetian-style buildings, clear blue waters, and small fishing boats that give it a timeless charm. Located at the northern tip of Kefalonia, it feels peaceful yet full of life. The village is home to excellent restaurants, some of which are famous, as well as boutique shops, making it a lively and modern destination.
Over the past 30 years, Fiskardo has become a popular stop for visiting yachts. It is often called the "St. Tropez of Greece" because, in the summer months of July and August, the rich and famous arrive on their superyachts. It's not unusual to spot a celebrity enjoying a coffee or savoring some traditional Greek food like saganaki!
A Place with a Rich History
Fiskardo is not just a tourist spot; it has been an important location for centuries. People have lived and fished here since before the Roman Empire. Over time, Romans, Normans, and later the Venetians controlled the port, using it for trade. Goods like salt, charcoal, and raisins from nearby villages were shipped to mainland Greece and northern Europe.
For those interested in history, there is plenty to explore. A scenic walk leads to the old Venetian lighthouse, passing the ruins of a Norman monastery on the way back. There are also remains of a Roman villa on the village beach and an ancient Roman cemetery nearby.
One fascinating story from World War II involves a plane that was shot down during the German occupation of Fiskardo. Divers later discovered the wreck in a nearby bay and even tracked down the pilot’s family, who still had his diary. This diary is now on display at the Fiskardo Dive Centre.
One of the Few Villages Untouched by the 1953 Earthquake In 1953
A devastating earthquake struck Kefalonia, destroying most of the island’s villages. However, Fiskardo miraculously remained largely intact, preserving its beautiful Venetian-style architecture. This makes it one of the best places to experience the island’s historical charm.
A Favourite Spot for Celebrities & Yachters
Fiskardo is a popular stop for luxury yachts and has hosted many celebrities over the years. Its picturesque harbour, lined with waterfront tavernas and boutique shops, creates an exclusive yet relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, attracting visitors from around the world.
